A Tiny Step for Texit
Movement on the Texas Split Referendum
In my last post I mentioned that I would send out a note if there was any movement on the Texas bill to add a referendum on Texas leaving the United States.
This morning I got an alert that the bill has been read into the record and referred to the State Affairs standing committee. Seven of twelve members of the committee are Republican. They could ignore it, debate and defer it, or move it forward - either way, it’s (still) entirely up to the Texas GOP to decide what to do.
Glancing at the primary and general election history for the seven GOP members, they all appear to be in safe ruby-red districts. Most had no primary or general election challengers. Generally speaking, members in these sorts of districts are likely more concerned about getting a primary challenger from the right, not a general challenger from the left. The most “vulnerable” member is Harless in District 126, and he won his primary unopposed with less than ten thousand votes (the general had less than seventy-fire thousand). It’s pretty easy to imagine a charismatic primary firebrand managing to go door-to-door and grabbing enough votes to be a primary challenger on a mediagenic issue. If four of the seven Republicans decide to move it forward, it’ll probably move ahead.
Never a dull day nowadays.
All the best, and stay safe out there.
